With the rapidly growing demands in robotic applications, there is an importance of developing customized manipulators for serving various operations in different workspaces. Conventional manipulators used today in various industries are restricted to predefined working environments and, as the environment changes to a more cluttered one, it is difficult for those manipulators to operate in the new environment. This book involves the development of a general procedure to design customized manipulators according to the defined workspace. In this book, the worst configuration corresponding to each joint is first determined on the basis of maximum torque requirements for selection of the joint actuators. Based on the specified material properties and the load acting on the link, the dimension of links have been calculated. A thesis is presented on the seismic evaluation of a viaduct using non-linear analysis techniques. The Bolu viaduct is a 2-3 km long seismically isolated structure with two parallel bridges each with a span length of 39.2 m and pier height of maximum 49 m that was nearly complete when it was struck by the 1999 Duzce earthquake in Turkey. With the design based on AASHTO standards, it suffered complete failure of the seismic isolation system and narrowly avoided total collapse due to excessive superstructure moment. After investigations the retrofit of the viaduct had been decided due to the study carried out by Michele Calvi and J. Nigel Priestley. This thesis concentrates on the retrofitted structure of Viaduct 1 by non-linear time history analysis.

The book has been written based on original research work. It focuses on river flooding, vulnerability and slums. It reveals the disastrous situation of slum dwellers of Dhaka city during flood. The special feature of this book is that it is a comparative study. Two slums of Dhaka city have been chosen to determine flood vulnerability. In this regard, four factors: economic, social, susceptibility and coping capacity have been considered. Data have been collected mostly from primary as well as secondary sources. The study finds that slum people are most vulnerable to flood. It is tried to calculate the vulnerability of slum dwellers in both qualitatively and quantitatively which is time-demanding step to calculate the vulnerability of a community. It finds some surprising results which are not usually understandable for slum people. For reducing flood vulnerability of slum dwellers, several options have been proposed.
